New Emperor colonies found by satellite

BAS Press Release 24 January 2024.  Scientists from British Antarctic Survey have discovered four previously unknown emperor penguin breeding sites.

Four unreported emperor penguin colonies discovered by satellite by Fretwell, P., is published in Antarctic Science.

Of particular interest in the publication:

The third newly reported site is north of the eastern side of the West Ice Shelf (latitude -66.08, longitude 86.53).

After consultation with scientists from the Australian Antarctic Division, I propose the name ‘Vanhoeffen Colony’ after Ernst Vanhoeffen, the biologist on board the First German South Polar Expedition led by Dagobert Erich von Drygalski on the ship Gauss.
