Our next ANARE Club Online Zoom Event with the National Library of Australia is locked in! Dr Rebecca Fleming, Senior Advisor on the Antarctic History Digitisation Project will run a presentation to the ANARE Club on Thursday 30 October, 3:00 pm AEDT (04Z UTC). For details of the event time at your location, see Times and Timezones below.
This event follows on from our successful engagement with the The National Library of Australia’s Antarctic Collections Digitisation Appeal that will bring Australia’s story in the southernmost continent to life on Trove. The records of scientists and explorers like Phillip & Nel Law, Thomas Griffith Taylor, Isobel Bennett and others will be available online in 2026.
Abstract:
The National Library of Australia holds a wide array of Antarctica related collections. Join historian and curator Dr Rebecca Fleming as she takes us through highlights of some of these collections. From classic photographs taken by Frank Hurley in the early twentieth century, to highlights from the Australian Antarctic Division Oral History collection, Rebecca will showcase a range of gems in the collection. This talk will also offer a preview for ANARE members of a selection of items which will be digitised thanks to the Library’s 2025 Tax Time Appeal. Snapshots from these collections will include extracts from letters and diaries written by Philip Law and a glimpse of some of the sketches completed by Nel Law during her time in Antarctica. Come along to learn more about how you can access these remarkable collections as well as the resources on offer by the National Library of Australia.
