With sadness the ANARE Club reports the passing of Bill Macha (known to many as ‘Bilko’) on 19 November 2023.

Bill was part of a 14 man construction party who went on the Nella Dan to work as a scaffolding rigger at REPSTAT in January 1966 for 29 days.
He had another voyage on the Nella Dan in 1967 but was not successful in reaching REPSTAT due to heavy pack ice. He had a trip to Mawson instead and helped build some new bollards to hold the ship in the harbour.
In 1969 Bill went to REPSTAT later named Casey at the opening in February 1969 as the expedition assistant for the winter.
Bill returned to Casey in 1971 for the year as a rigger to erect the new radio masts.
