ACT Antarctic Flight

The ANARE Club, Canberra, (https://www.anareclub.org/australian-capital-territory) is offering the opportunity for a year 11 or 12 ACT college student to join the Antarctic Flights Qantas 787 Dreamliner return flight from Canberra to Antarctica on 7 November 2021. The ticket for the flight, a Superior Economy seat valued at over $3000, provides a chance for the student to meet other interested people, hear authoritative discussion about the frozen continent and to see the continent for themselves. Background

The ANARE Club Canberra is concerned that human activity is impacting on Antarctica in several ways. Climate change and increasing global temperatures are already having a major impact on Antarctic ice levels and annual sea ice generation and cycles with consequent issues for Antarctic biology and sea levels globally. Also, increasing demand for resources from a continually growing human population with increasing expectations for their living standards may lead to resource exploitation in this last natural pristine wilderness. While this is currently prevented under agreements that form the International Antarctic Treaty System  the System is not absolute nor robust and may falter at any stage. And thirdly, multiple countries claim a foothold in Antarctica in the form of scientific or meteorological bases and increasing pressure on fragile ecosystems from habitation and resupply activities continue to grow.

Applications are open to all year 11 and 12 students residing and currently attending a school in the Australian Capital Territory.
