Background
The Silence Calling (Bowden 1997) records that LARCs replaced DUKWs at Macquarie Island and then, in the same summer, are introduced into Antarctica in November 1970, 55 years ago. To mark the occasion our DUKW and LARC operator members have agreed to offer us insights into the vital roles played by these amphibious vehicles and their crews in the establishment and continued support of ANARE activities at our bases.

• Noel Cooper Mawson Army Det ANARE 1955-6 also wintered that year
• Shane Rollins Army Det ANARE 76-78 then wintered 79 and 82
• George Friend 82 Army Det ANARE and 87 Army filming and rescue from Nella Dan at Macca
• Ian Toohill Army Det ANARE 82-83 summered at Mawson and made film for Vic Dept Ed
• Andrew Bottrell MAJGEN (Rtd) Army Det ANARE 89-91, two summers
